On Saturday, August 28th, George Canyon was the first recipient of the Canadian Friends for Life Award this weekend, presented by Children With Diabetes (CWD) as part of the First Annual Friends For Life International Conference and Expo held in Vancouver, previous events having been held in the United States.  The Award was presented to him during the Family and Friends Banquet at the Renaissance Harbourside Hotel and was followed by an intimate performance by the two time Juno Award winner.

The Friends for Life Award is presented each year to a person who has made a tremendous and meaningful impact upon the lives of families who have children with type 1 diabetes. This is CWD’s first Canadian Friend for Life Award, and George Canyon has been selected to be the very first recipient.

“George has donated his time, energy, compassion and good karma to our CWD families in both the United States and Canada for the past 4 years. He has spent countless hours meeting with children and families with type 1 diabetes, sharing his own experiences about growing up with type 1 diabetes, comparing notes and strategies, and simply becoming a good friend to all of us. Children with Diabetes is very proud to honour George Canyon with the Friends for Life award.” Says Laura Billetdoux, VP Education and Programs for Children With Diabetes Inc.

The Friends For Life Canada Conference is a three day event and contains an international group of world-renowned clinicians, researchers, physicians, adults, children, and families with diabetes to learn the most current information in diabetes care.  Events include workshops, a banquet, get-togethers, seminars and dances for the teens!  The focus of this conference is to bring people with Type 1 diabetes together.
